Language learning involves the mind and brain working in unison. You hear sounds that are relayed to your brain and can be understood as a language that is imprinted in your mind and recognized. You may listen to sounds that are not recognized by your mind.
The same process is used in learning a new language, as was used in learning the language that we call our native language. We need to imprint the sounds of English as natural sounds through direct and consistent imprinting of meaning to English language sounds.
Immerse yourself in the English Language
To learn how to speak English, one has to, first of all, expect to learn the language in steps and not all at once. Start by only playing recordings in English of simple stories read by an English-speaking person. There are programmed study guides with tapes available that will make learning to speak English very doable.
Those who wish to learn on their own, getting a few recordings with the narrator’s words written out, will be the first step in associating words with the sounds made in the language you are trying to learn to speak. A few days of immersion in English will prepare you to learn to speak the language by imitating the vocal qualities of speakers of English.
Get an English Language Dictionary
The next step in learning to speak English is to get a dictionary in the language that you speak with translations into English. You can do these exercises until you feel competent with English to try and speak it. In your bilingual dictionary, find the list of alphabetical sounds and alphabets in English.
Practice saying the alphabet in English and practice making the sound that corresponds to the letter. If you are interested in learning how to speak English and are not only desirous of learning a few phrases in English to get by in a restaurant, you need to learn the English alphabet and its sounds as if a memory test.

Once you have found your bilingual dictionary, and have practiced memorizing the English alphabet, make a list of ten words in English taken from your bilingual dictionary. Learn to say those words in English by mouthing the letters found in each word and learn the meaning of each word.
The pronunciation of each word is usually found in parenthesis in an English dictionary but might mean nothing if you have not already practiced the English alphabet. If you can make a simple sentence using those ten words, do it and try to say it as if you were a speaker of English.
Frequently Communicate with English Speakers
Don’t make the mistake of thinking that if you frequent a place where everyone speaks English that you will pick up the language like osmosis. That only works if you have to interact with speakers of English in their language for long periods.
Learning to speak English is a time-consuming project. If you try to learn to speak English and quit after a few weeks, you obviously will not learn how to speak English. But, if you learn a few sentences in English and go somewhere where you can use those sentences, you will be encouraged by your success to continue with your lessons.
How a Tape Recorder Can Help You to Learn English
Your next expense should be a tape recorder. Tape yourself saying words in English and compare your voice with that of speakers of English. Don’t be afraid to criticize yourself and to practice your pronunciation of words in English until you sound like the speakers of English that you have been listening to in recordings.
If there are classes available in English as a second language, sign up and get the classroom instruction that you need. If you take English in school, you will be taught English formally, but your speaking of English might not be complete until after many years of learning English in school.
English as a second language is taught with other objectives than learning the grammar of English. English as a second language is taught by learning to say complete sentences in English and learning more and more sentences in English. The objective is to get you to sound as if you are speaking in English.
English as a Second Language (ESL) Method
Speaking in any language means to make complete thoughts or to voice thoughts in the language. Learning to say sentences and memorizing sentences in English will accomplish that process for you.
You will remember complete thoughts and say them as if you were a speaker of English since you are speaking complete thoughts, your memorized sentences, in English. Read our article on learning a new language fastly and fluently.
