To become a carpenter, you must begin taking classes as early as high school. There are a lot of things you must know and must be very familiar with – some you’ll learn by studying and taking classes, and some you’ll learn with specific on the job training. Continue reading to learn the things you must know and have classes you should take in high school, what to do after high school, and who to contact to become a carpenter.
Skills you must know and have
To become a carpenter, you should have excellent mathematical skills, and you must be willing and able to do a lot of physical work. You also will need to have excellent manual dexterity. You will need woodworking tools, career counseling, and online career search.
Classes you should take in high school
Start learning the trade of carpentry while in high school. Take as many math courses as you can, they will help you to be better at math and be able to know measurements. Mechanical drawing is another good class to take; it will help you learn how to use mechanical lettering devices.
It will also help you learn how to draw basic dimensions lines such as dimension, extension, and leader lines. You will learn how to use computer software to create drawings using simple and basic commands. Blueprint reading is also a high class to take; you will need to know how to read blueprints to work in the carpentry field.
This class will teach you how to read blueprints and how to draw blueprints. You should also take as many shop classes as possible. Shop classes will help you get used to manual work, and get you ready for all the physical work you will be doing once you start a job in the carpentry field.
What to do after high school
After high school, you ask your school guidance counselor for information on carpentry apprentice programs in your area. However, you must keep in mind that an apprenticeship usually lasts about four years. It also includes classroom work, and it can also be tough to get an apprenticeship.
If you are not able to get an apprenticeship, you should try to get a job in a beginner’s position for a carpentry contractor. However, in this position, you will most likely only receive on-the-job training in one type of carpentry work.
If this happens, you will need to learn other types of carpentry skills from somewhere else. The more trained the carpenter, the more likely you will be able to get a job during tough times. Carpenters that aren’t skilled in multiple types of carpentry will be less likely to get a job when the economy is not doing to well.
Who to contact
You will want to contact the National Association of Home Builders, the Associated General Contractors, the Associated Builders and Contractors, and other unions to get information about apprenticeships and jobs in the carpentry field. These unions will help you to find a job or an apprenticeship that will help you pursue the career in carpentry that you are looking for.
Additional tips and warnings
Injury rates in the carpentry field are high, so it is always good to be extra cautious. One thing to take into consideration is that carpentry is an outside job; weather conditions do not always supply good working conditions for carpenters. This can create some unpaid downtime.
